Narcotic painkillers recommended to be more restricted by the FDA

Posted on November 1st, 2013 No Comments

On Thursday, October 24 the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) recommended instituting new regulations that would tighten the reins on usage of painkillers that contain the narcotic hydrocone. These drugs are used to administer relief for injury, dental extractions, arthritis pain, and more. Around 47 million people were prescribed hydrocone-containing drugs in 2011.

It was found out that hydrocone-containing drugs form 70% of all opioid prescriptions, and that they were widely abused because of the lax restrictions imposed on them.

In effect, the new regulations would halve the drug supply that a patient can obtain without a doctor’s prescription, making it 90 days. At present, a patient can refill a prescription five times over a six-month period before he will be required to obtain a new prescription.

The FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research director Dr. Janet Woodcock said the new regulations will likely go into effect next year.
