MLB pitcher’s medical nightmare

Posted on March 1st, 2012 No Comments

MLB pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, Bobby Jenks, recently detailed his medical troubles caused by a surgical error that took place during a spine operation.

Last December, Jenks went into surgery to remove two of four bone spurs on his spine. Doctors successfully removed two spurs but mistakenly started on the third. They then failed to completely remove the bone spur before finishing the surgery.

Jenks was rushed back to the hospital for emergency surgery after spinal fluid began leaking out of his incision. The partially removed bone spur was serrated, leaving holes that allowed spinal fluid to escape and cause an infection. If the infection had spread to the spinal fluid, the mistake could have had potentially fatal results.
