Arsenic found in baby formula, cereal bars, energy drinks

Posted on February 16th, 2012 No Comments

A new study out of Dartmouth College reveals that high levels of arsenic are in foods containing organic brown rice syrup.

Brown rice syrup is a sweetener usually used to replace high fructose corn syrup. The arsenic levels found in this food product are several times the amount the EPA legally allows in drinking water. Researchers tested 17 baby formulas, 29 cereal bars, and 3 energy shot drinks.

The brands Baby’s Only Organic Soy Toddler Formula and Baby’s Only Organic Dairy Toddler Formula made by Nature’s One were some of the baby formulas with high levels of arsenic. Infants are more susceptible to arsenic’s negative effects, such as a lower IQ and poor intellectual functions, since their brains are developing.
